FUKUSHIMA: a Tsunami of Renewable Energy

Wind and photovoltaic farms in Japan. Clean energy in the prefecture of Fukushima

INFRASTRUTTURE SPA, lead by Pier Francesco Rimbotti, CEO and chairman, is the first non-Japanese company to have been awarded a public tender in Japan, and the first Italian business to obtain a “non-recourse” loan from one of the most illustrious Japanese banks, for an investment in land to be used for energy transition.

This is an effort Japan has been working on for some time: in fact, the Milanese company (with multiple branches around the world, including Tokyo) is developing over 250 MW in wind and solar power. The most recent development has been the establishment of a plant in Litate, Fukushima, by Solar Spv G.K., a subsidiary of Infrastrutture SpA. This location is also of immeasurable symbolic value, as it was struck in 2011 by a terrible tsunami that killed 20 thousand people and provoked a tremendous nuclear incident.

The local community was thoroughly supportive of the project, as the Italian company’s efforts to establish a source of clean energy in the area were greatly appreciated. In fact, in recent weeks, Litate’s Mayor, Makoto Sugioka, sent flowers (grown in the same area as the photovoltaic plant) and a letter to the Italian Embassy in Tokyo. This gesture was much appreciated by Gianluigi Benedetti, Italian ambassador to Tokyo, and, upon visiting the Infrastrutture SpA headquarters, he expressed that “Infrastrutture SpA is making important strides that are self-motivating and that contribute to Japan’s move towards decarbonisation and the nation’s pursuit of energetic autonomy.” In November 2020, work began on the development of a new energy farm, spread across 8 hectares of land. 9,670 450 W solar panels were installed on farmland occupying around 80 thousand square metres in two areas of Litate. The installation and setup process was completed by last October.
