Every year, we produce over two billion tonnes of waste, globally. A preposterous amount.
Nonetheless, observing this data from a business perspective, strongly suggests the possible birth of a new market.
In fact, a third of waste produced, neither goes to landfill sites, nor recycling systems; hypothetically, even if these materials and products were to be removed from parks, oceans and streets, the issue itself would not be resolved.
In order to limit the damage done, not only must we reduce how much we purchase, but we must also prolong, as much as possible, the use of single products, via the creation of a new value chain.
Nowadays, environmental protection is also sustained via the re-evaluation of waste products that may be re-utilised in some way, and consequently creating monetary value from rubbish.
Companies, such as Adidas and IKEA, have already embarked on the development of business models that will incorporate this knowledge and outlook.
Possible course of action:
pondering how to reduce upstream waste, finding ways to re-utilise discarded products and materials, transforming them into new goods. The true value of the waste market is yet to be determined, but it certainly is a nine figure business.
